Bubble Magnets **MomAdvice Notebook Experiment**

I’m trying to include my inspiration from Amy’s Notebook every week here. The last two weeks have been crazy in our home…I travelled with the kids for a week and when we returned I was ill. We still did some projects..but I didn’t get them blogged.

Please take a minute to check out MomAdvice.com and visit Amy’s Notebook. There are so many crafts, recipes and organizational ideas you will find SOMETHING (and if it is only one thing I will be amazed!!) that you can do. Include your children, your spouse or your BFF in the activity and you will find it even more enjoyable!

This week we accomplished the impossible at my house: Brendan has completed his Christmas Gifts for the family! It is OCTOBER folks! That is unheard of in our family! Generally the Notebook Experiments will refer you to all sorts of crafters and their neat-o projects…but the Bubble Magnets are Amy’s very own! I got the idea on a repost she did on September 2 this year.

I wanted something that Brendan and I could do together…that would actually make a useable gift…not just cute kid art…and something that could be given universally…so that we could complete the gifts in one fell swoop. These magnet fit the bill perfectly!

We did this project over the course of three days. Don’t panic…working with an almost 3 year old is sllllooooow movin’…and I purposefully did this project during Lillian’s morning nap so that Brendan and I could have some together time.

I purchased the glass beads at WalMart for around $4.00. This bag was larger than the bag at Michael’s and cheaper…even after the Michael’s Coupon. At each trip I’ve made to Michael’s/Hobby Lobby I’ve made it a point to check out their clearance scrapping paper. It was interesting to me to try to see the paper in 1″ circles… so I got lots of paper for around $0.10/pg.

First we laid out the paper and I showed Brendan how to lay out the glass beads…he MORE than got the idea.

Brendan kept saying “We havin’ FUN mom! Dis is FUN! Yeah!” I thought he would like it…but the enthusiasm was an added bonus :)

He worked on his one sheet while I did up a bunch of extras. We ModgePodged the beads onto the paper and then let them dry overnight. The next day during nap time we commenced with the cutting.

Brendan has just recently really learned how to cut well. He watched me cut a few of the beads off of the paper and then went to town on his own. He really did a nice job!

Our final day we laid out all of the beads and the magnets we bought with our 40% off coupon at Michael’s (making for a total of around $4) and we brought out the hot glue gun. Brendan said “YEAH! MORE GOO!”

I used 1″ round magnets after debating between these and the strips of self adhesive magnets. I liked that the adhesive ones were smaller and you couldn’t see them at all behind the bead…but they weren’t terribly strong…and I sort of thought the big magnet with the hot glue would reinforce the paper backing. Once they were done and on the fridge I I think they looked pretty good!

Brendan is excited to be giving this out at Christmas…and I’m excited to have the gift done and ready for wrapping!

Check out the one with ants. We are going to make more of these and give them all to Uncle Matt…he will appreciate the humor :)
