Rice Krispies Making Memories Challenge for Me… $100 Visa Gift Card for You!
April 6, 2011 by Jenn
Filed under From My Kitchen, Giveaways
My mom was one of those moms that made a fresh batch of your favorite cookies every time she came to visit in college (or you know, now)…. only my favorites weren’t cookies per se … they were “Frosted Chews”…. or, as I’ve come to find out “Scotcheroos Rice Krispies Treats”. They are amazing…but that is beside the point. The POINT is …. that when The Motherhood and Kellogg’s™ Rice Krispies™ offered me a chance to work with three of my favorite local bloggers in a Rice Krispies Treats™ food challenge…my little heart skipped a beat (or two).
Over the course of this year, Kristen from Dine and Dish, Kelly from Kansas City Mamas and Julie from My Kansas City Mommy and I will compete four different times against three other groups across the country. Kellogg’s™ Rice Krispies™ will provide us with different themes for our competitions and the first theme is: Easter!
So hold onto your hats because this is amazing! Kristen shared with us a recipe she uses for homemade Kettle Korn … you know…yummy sweet and salty goodness?! THEN she shared an idea about using that concept to create….. *drumroll*
Kettle Krispies Treats! The sweet and salty of Kettle Korn with the light Rice Krispies™ and gooey marshmallows? To.Die.For. So we gave it a whirl and whipped up a couple of batches (for testing, of course).
Seeing as how we all have young kids, it was important to us that this recipe needed to be not only tasty, but easy and FUN! Something the kids would want to help out with. We decided that egg shaped Kettle Krispies would do the trick so we went Paula Dean on some plastic eggs (we buttered ‘em up, y’all!) and use that to mold our Easter Eggs. When we were finished we sprinkled some with sugar, some with candy sprinkles and well…since these babies can stand on their own we left some of them plain.
We used these for table decorations and even whipped up a little name tag to create a place setting….. a great idea for the “Kids’ Table” or a fun Easter Party Play Date!
So here it is for you…our recipe for Kettle Krispies Treats! (Don’t forget to keep reading!! If this recipe isn’t reason enough to make your day … I have about one hundred more to share in a minute!)
Kettle Krispies Easter Egg Treats
Ingredients
6 tablespoons butter
6 cups of Rice Krispies
3 teaspoons Kosher salt
2/3 cup sugar For Treats
1/4 cup and 2 teaspoons butter
5 cups mini marshmallows
Extra butter for greasing egg moldsDirections
- Melt butter in an iron skillet or dutch oven over medium heat.
- Increase temp to medium high and add Rice Krispies, Kosher salt, and sugar.
- Stir continuously over medium high heat until Rice Krispies are caramelized and slightly brown. Around 7 minutes. (see below – notice someone’s nicely manicured hands.)
- Remove from stove and continue stirring for another three minutes until cool. Set aside.
- While Kettle Krispies are cooling, butter the inside of 12 large plastic eggs. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter and marshmallows over medium-low heat.
- After mix is well blended, continue to stir and cook for two minutes longer.
- Add Kettle Krispies and stir till well coated. Remove from heat.
- Fill buttered egg molds with mixture and let them set for 10 minutes. Remove from molds and decorate if desired.
Kristen taught us that the secret to making these goodies is to make sure that your Rice Krispies get nice and caramelized in the skillet before you mix them into treats.
That is IT! Simple, right? Great! Now, onto something even sweeter!

Tiny Prints Holiday Card Review
I love to send out Holiday cards; in theory. It is always on my to do list….and it almost never gets done. Let’s say… it hasn’t gotten done since SuperBoy was born nearly 5 years ago. I always blame it on being too pregnant…or too tired from breastfeeding, etc…. well I am neither of those things for the first time in 6 years so it’s time to get my act together!
Just around the same time I had resolved to make THIS the year I get those cards out I was offered a chance to review cards from the 2010 Holiday line at Tiny Prints. Um, yeah! I’ve always been in love with the designs at Tiny Prints … but again…that whole disorganized and overwhelmed thing.
Tiny Prints provides simple, modern and unique stationery from Christmas cards to personalized greeting cards to thank you cards and even business cards. Offering exclusive designs from the nation’s top designers, easy card personalization, a powerful preview engine and top-notch customer service and paper quality, their designs have been lauded by numerous television networks, publications and celebrities. With Tiny Prints by your side the Holidays will be a cinch! They offer perfect party invitations for every occasion and memorable personalized photo-gifts like notebooks, photo-books and calendars.
So in turn for these words, I received 75 Holiday cards of my choice to send out to friends and family (who will, by the way, die of shock I’m sure). This is the part that gets difficult for me. There are so many great choices, so many ideas that pop into my head when I start looking at card layouts. If I’ve made it this far in the process….this step will usually do me in.
When I logged onto the TinyPrints website I started browsing around. What I noticed immediately was the opportunity to tag “My Picks” … a card file of sorts for my favorite designs. Instead of trying to remember and jumping back and forth from screen to screen it puts them all in a folder for me to review when I’m done browsing.
Once I settled on a layout that I thought was right for us I decided I needed a family Christmas photo. I embarked on the venture to take the photo myself to save time, money and stress. I got matching outfits for the kids, I scheduled to use a friend’s house because I felt she got more natural light ( listen to me talk like I know what I’m doing)…and I went to work. It was a disaster. I found myself with an order deadline and no pictures.
I browsed through the site some more and found a “Tips” section… how to pick and take good photos for your cards. It gives tips on resolution, coloring, background and even attire…to help you get the best pictures for your cards. With some tips I found here I was able to pick out photos that would work well and represented my kids.
When I ordered my cards I got the digital proof the following day and my cards arrived the next week. I was honestly surprised at how fast they got here.
Now all I have to do is get those puppies addressed and in the mail! I’ve already sent out emails for updated mailing addresses… I’ll update you as to my actual progress
If I was smart I would have used the mailing service that Tiny Prints offers…. you provide them with names and addresses for your cards and they address them…you pay postage!
If you are a blogger…wouldn’t you like a chance to review a set of these cards?? Fill out THIS FORM for a chance to get cards of your own to review!
Winners of the Clorox Flu Prevention Gift Baskets!
Last week I met up with two other fabulous Kansas City Bloggers, Kelly from Kansas City Mamas and Candy from KC Metro Moms and together, we went under the needle. Well, we went one at a time. But we supported each other as our kids all watched in wonder as their mommies got their flu shots.
The Kansas City VNA had two tents set up in their parking lot; one for getting shots and the other for visiting with their supporting partners and sitting down for a snack. That’s the part my kids liked. Everyone else moved on…and my kids were snacking away. They also got their first set of Silly Bandz (I know..I’m a mean and horrible mom) and were ecstatic about them.
Now that I’ve got my flu shot taken care of … I need to announce the TWO winners of the Flu Prevention Gift Baskets being provided by Clorox for two of you lucky SuperReaders! These gift baskets come with Clorox hand sanitizers and wipes, a $25 Gift Card to Target (swoon) and a Trick or Treat Bag for the kiddos filled with some little goodies including the aforementioned SillyBandz that my kids won’t take off really like.
*Drumroll Please*

Libby’s Giveaway Winner
Congratulations to Becky Black for her winning tip in the Libby’s Back to the Table giveaway! There were lots of great suggestions but Becky’s stood out to me.
Here was Becky’s suggestion on how to make dinner time a priority with your family:
I have a couple things that I try to do…
First, have the kiddos participate – mix, measure, press the timer button, anything that they can do that is appropriate for their age. (An apron helps too, since they want to be like mommy!)
And I try to serve at least one HEALTHY item that I know they like in case they won’t eat the other healthy stuff, or even try it for that matter. I am lucky because my two love broccoli among other things.
Lastly, we sometimes arrange the food on the plate so that it is fun. We don’t do it every time because I want them to eat their food even when it isn’t arranged in a pretty face. Food coloring, cookie cutters, and creativity are your friends. USE THEM!
Becky wins a reusable tote from Libby’s, a variety of canned goods from Libby’s, a state of the art can opener and a copy of Hannah Keeley’s Total Mom Makeover.
Back to the Table with Libby’s and a Giveaway!

Filed under Blog, Family Fun, Giveaways
It is no secret to anyone who reads my blog that I am far from perfect, and I’ve chosen to embrace those flawed aspects of my life and keep on movin’ on. Having SuperBaby however really REALLY knocked the wind out of my sails. One thing that went by the wayside when I was pregnant was dinnertime routines.
That’s not true. We had routines. They involved me throwing together something that passed as a healthy, well rounded meal and serving it to my family … in front of the television.
Very shortly after SuperBaby arrived my husband and I agreed we needed to take back dinnertime; and fast.
Sitting together as a family to eat your meals is much more than gathering for food. it is a time to enjoy each other. It is a time to share with each other. I truly believe that sitting down to eat together shows a level of respect for the family unit that is healthy and necessary.
So we came back to the table.
A couple of months ago I got an email from Erin at The Motherhood inviting me to participate in Libby’s Back to the Table event in Kansas City with some amazing KC bloggers; benefiting Hillcrest, a great Kansas City cause. Let’s see…food, charity, bloggers…How could I refuse? I did receive compensation from The Motherhood for my time, but really, this event was right up my alley!
Last week we all met at the Farmhouse restaurant in Kansas City with author and mother of seven Hannah Keeley. We chatted, shared tips on what keeps our kids at the table and ate some great food.
Then we got to work. We filled 30 reusable grocery bags with some great canned goods and topped it off with our own ideas of what would help families make and share dinner together:
- Tracie from Penny Pinchin’ Mom and Kelly from Kansas City Mamas brought Ziploc Containers
- Candy from Mommypalooza brought measuring cups and spoons
- Anjanette from Eat From Your Pantry had the great idea to add votive candles and a coupon organizer
- Heather from My Kansas City Mommy brought mixing bowls for each bag
- Kristen from Dine and Dish brought a “Chatter Box”… a Chinese takeout box with 25 conversation starter questions in it
- I brought a special day “Red Plate. This was a tradition in my family growing up. Kristen found a great place you can visit to read about the “Red Plate”.
Hillcrest received 30 bags stuffed with these items to share with families that are transitioning into independent living. For whatever reason they’ve been down on their luck and are working their way up.
Because Libby’s was THAT COOL about this event…they have a goodie bag for each of us to pass on to one of our readers. The goodie bag includes some canned goods (fruits and veggies) from Libby’s, a state of the art can opener, and a copy of Hannah’s book Total Mom Makeover.
All you have to do is leave me a comment with your favorite tip for keeping family dinner a number one priority. That’s it!
Entries will be accepted until midnight CST on Sunday, October 10. The person with the best “Back to the Table Tip” will be the winner! You must be over 18 to win.
Product Review: New Tide Sport
I will start with my standard disclaimer: I don’t writ a lot of reviews, I have even fewer ( read: none) sponsored posts. I review when it is a product that looks interesting to me; when it is a product I happened upon and thought other folks should know about; or when it is a product, or newer version of a product I already use. In this case, it’s the last one.
At BlogHer’09 we received samples of Tide Stain Release drop ins. I brought them home and got around to trying them a couple of months later. I was amazed, I was stupefied, I was in love. These little buggers worked SO WELL that I bought up a ton on a great sale and I haven’t looked back.
I decided during said sale that I would give Tide laundry detergent a try. I’ve always used scent-free detergent and my husband had been on my case to use something that smelled good… Tide smelled good and I was already impressed with the Drop-Ins AND it was on sale so I thought I’d give it a go.
Not to sound like one of those commercials but after I washed the first load of laundry I actually thought it looked BRIGHTER. I showed it to my husband… he shrugged and said “Isn’t that what the commercial says?” Nice.
So when Tide asked me to do a review of their New Tide Sport with FebreezeI figured I was just their gal! Don’t get me wrong, I love the original but I’m not about to give anything other than an honest review.
The idea behind this new detergent is that it is designed to clean not only your everyday laundry…but that laundry that gets a little more *ahem* smelly than the rest. The laundry that is generated by playing sports, working out…working in the yard…you get the idea.
My husband used to ride mountain and road bikes and is training to go on a biking trip this summer. He also likes to be outside working in the garden, on the house …so you could see where a detergent designed to target sweaty clothes would be useful.
I used New Tide Sport with Febreeze without using the Stain Release pouches that I normally put in the wash, just to give it a fair trial. When the laundry was done my whole kitchen smelled so nice! (My laundry is in a small closet off of the kitchen.) Its one thing if the KITCHEN smells nice…but I was worried about the laundry. I want CLEAN, not just perfumey. In other words, I want the smells gone, not just covered up. Mission accomplished! I am so pleased this product did everything it said it would do. I did not have any stubborn grass stains to check this out on…but I’m guessing if this alone doesn’t do the trick, once you add some Tide Stain Release
it will be fantastic.
If you would like to read more about New Tide Sport with Febreeze you can visit the official Tide website. Want to give it a try? You can get $1/1 coupons on the Tide Sport with Febreeze page there!
Tide offered me some free samples and coupons for a year’s worth of the New Tide Sport with Febreeze for doing this review. Because I absolutely love my readers…I’m going to turn this into a giveaway! Not because I don’t love the stuff…but because I want to share it with you and I have a large stockpile of Tide laundry detergent already! Stay tuned for details and a giveaway date in the near future!
National Napping Day!!! (And some Giveaways!!)
Is she serious? YES I AM! Today is National Napping Day!! What sweeter words than “Nap” to a mom of one…two..three….you get the point. There are all kinds of statistics about napping and productivity…napping and creativity…all of the wonders of the world who got that way by napping… I’m here to tell you that the serenity of a nap…the blissful peace of those two hours a day when everyone is miraculously sleeping at the SAME TIME…are a miracle greater than any other. This, to me, is a time worth commemorating…and the fact that there is a “National Napping Day” …. signifies brilliance and forward thinking among the powers that be.
Protect-A-Bed is celebrating this day with a Twitter contest… a chance to win a set of Premium Pillow Protectors just for following @Protect_A_Bed on Twitter and sharing your funniest napping stories using the hashtag #nappingday. That’s it!
Protect-A-Bed offers consumers a complete line of protective bedding products to create a Healthy Sleep Zone. In my house we have a preschooler, a toddler, a 6 month old, 3 dogs (all very old) and two parents (at their wits end)…. I can tell you that a protective mattress cover for our bed is nothing BUT a good idea!! (Ohhhh how I wish I had this product last week when the flu hit and everyone wanted to sleep in Mommy’s bed…) Both my husband and my oldest suffer from a wide array of allergies…and there is ALWAYS someone sleeping in our bed who is drooling, throwing up, peeing or… well… you get the idea. Beach towels just aren’t going to cut it forever! We have been toying with the idea of getting a new mattress set…but really…it seems sort of pointless until everyone is a little older. But this would HELP!
Protect-A-Bed and Resourceful Mommy Media have arranged for me to test out one of their Premium Mattress Covers …. and have one to give away to one of my readers as well!! All in the name of a healthy, happy nap. These are my kinda people!!!
SO… interested in getting one of these for yourself?
