I just signed up with Defenbaugh. I can't afford $18/mo., and thought that this would be better than NOT recycling, which has been my MO for several months since I just don't have the time as a single father with a full time job to sort trash and deliver to wal mart.

It doesn't make sense to me that this large corp would turn recycling into trash when any exposé on that would trash their business, and ding their shareholder. While Sunflower is an admirable company, and I would like to support a local biz, it also makes sense for them to question the operations of a new competitor, so I don't think they're the most reliable source of infomation on Defenbaugh.

Do you have any more concrete info on bad practices at Defenbaugh, besides Sunflower? I'd cancel service if I knew that they were turning my recyclables into landfill.

Thank you so much for this post. I heard something about a recycling service in town for $5. After reading this I plan on sticking to my usual method. I have 4 plastic bins. My son and I sort as we go. Then about every 2 months we take these bins to the Walmart Recycling Center and dump them in the appropriate areas. This only takes about 10 minutes. It is super easy to recycle and I recommend it. I only have to put out the trash about once a month now.

That certainly is frustrating!! Thanks for sharing. I had that same problem with another recycling company in town some time ago....and I had been a previous customer of theirs!

My husband and I signed up for recycling service with Deffenbaugh for one main reason: I tried for WEEKS to get Sunflower to call me back to no avail. While I agree with the majority of the points you made, my biggest concern was that it certainly seemed to me that Sunflower was not interested in getting my business or they would have returned the calls and emails I sent them. If they really did care that much about keeping their business local and satisfying the needs of the community, they should have done a lot more to get my business that I was willingly offering them!
