Running Together because Together Counts

Remember that episode of Friends where Rachel starts jogging in Central Park and Phoebe joins her?  Remember how Phoebe would run…like a child?  She was all crazy and flailing her arms around…..

One of our new activities this year is running.  Yeah, that’s right….I said RUNNING.

Okay.  I don’t run.  the KIDS run… and I tag along behind them.  But I walk really, really fast.

SuperBoy’s school has a Marathon Club where the kids can run 1-2 miles on a preset course a couple of times a week.  When they collect enough miles to finish their marathon….they get a cool shirt and a little celebration.  It’s brilliant.  I won’t go into all of the benefits of getting kids up and moving outdoors before school (there are a TON of benefits)…but it turns out this is something we love doing.  The kids look forward to it….SuperBoy, it turns out, loves to run.  He loves being alone without being by himself…focusing on what he is doing and not worrying about anyone else…. SuperGirl just loves to flail run…. she looks like she has been set free.

I’m not a big fan of running myself…. but I enjoy walking.  What I enjoy the most is that we’ve found something to do together…that they can each do individually….and it is helping them learn healthy habits at the same time.

I’m all about my kids being healthy….I make our food we buy very little pre-packaged food.  We eat a variety of foods: vegetables, fish, wild game, fruits.  But we also love to bake in this house and we love sweets.  It is very important to me that my kids grow up knowing that it is okay to eat these things, too….and I want them to know how to listen to their bodies:  know when they are full, when they’ve had enough.

When I first learned about Together Counts a couple of years ago at Type A Parent Conference I was so excited.  An organization whose mission is to get families healthy….by eating meals together and getting active….learning moderation:  balance what you take in with the energy you expend.  Simple, right?

Together Counts is a nationwide program inspiring active and healthy living. The principle behind the program is Energy Balance, which means balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn.  It’s a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together more than 200 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professional sports organizations.

Sometimes it is the simplest things that take us the longest to figure out!

    I love Together Counts and that you’ve found this fun activity to do with your kids!

  2. I think if I DID try to start running …. I would be too embarrassed to tell anyone :) I’m good with fast walking, easier on this old, addled body. I’ll leave the running to super stars like you and Courtney!
